The awards celebrate civil engineering projects that have made significant contributions to local communities and recognise the rising stars of the South West industry.
Seven ‘inspirational’ civil engineering projects, including a stunning bridge and innovative surfing lake, are among the winners at the ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards 2020.
Tintagel Castle Bridge in Cornwall (pictured above), which spans a 190ft gorge to unite the two halves of the castle site for the first time in 500 years, attracted the Showcase Award this year.
The Wave, (pictured above) a ground-breaking artificial surfing lake near Bristol, won the popular vote to take the People’s Choice Award, after more than 3,000 people cast their vote for their favourite civil engineering scheme in South West England.
Mike Gallop, Chair of the Judging Panel and Route Director, Western, Network Rail, said:
“At no time since the early part of the Twentieth Century have we needed skilled engineers as much as we do today to help our country recover from this global pandemic. These winners show that we have the skills across the South West to do exactly that. I am sure they will help inspire the next generation to show what is possible in this wide and exciting field.”

As well as civil engineering projects, individual civil engineers at the start of their careers were recognised by the awards.
Shannon Martin, a Degree Apprentice at Arup in Bristol was named Apprentice of the Year. For the first time, the Graduate of the Year prize was jointly awarded to Rosie Poad, a Graduate Engineer at WSP, based in Devon and Rob Henley, a Transport Planner, also with Arup in Bristol.

The award winners were announced at an online event on Thursday 24 September 2020, after the physical awards ceremony, schedule for early July, had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Writer and broadcaster, Judi Spiers hosted the online event, which was sponsored by Kier Bam, Hays Specialist Recruitment and Tony Gee and Partners.
